根據人民網報導，一份推特說：『如果你要當美國小姐，你首先就應當是個美國人。』另一推特以全大寫稱，『什麼時候白人婦女才能贏得美國小姐？究竟何時？？！！』 有一人寫道：『他們挑選了一名穆斯林當美國小姐。那肯定讓歐巴馬高興。也許有他的一票。』CNN指出，這份推特可沒說到點子上：妮娜·達瓦魯瑞既不是穆斯林，總統歐巴馬也沒有投票。
美國部分民眾胸襟狹窄，妮娜·達瓦魯瑞一當選不久，網上迅即充斥針對她印度裔身份的言論，有網民指稱主辦單位選了一位穆斯林教徒為美利堅小姐。更有網民寫道：『美利堅小姐還是「基地小姐」？』 網民巴斯利更稱：『911恐襲周年才過了4天，而她就成為美利堅小姐？』還有網民指她『貌似恐怖分子』。
