曾經的汽車之城、音樂之都底特律已風光不再，不僅躍居美國「最悲慘城市」排行榜榜首，更於18日下午正式申請聯邦破產保護，迄今這是底特律成美國史上規模最大破產案的主角。
綜合媒體報導，底特律於今(2013)年3月份時已宣佈進入財政緊急狀態，該市的長期負債已達到約185億美元(約台幣5550億元)的天文數字，實在無力回天，宣告破產是唯一出路。
底特律市所在的密歇根州州長Rick Snyder表示，「這是一個艱難且痛苦的決定，他認為真的已經沒有別的選擇。」他在給奧爾和密歇根州財政部長Andrew Dillon的信中寫道，「許多人將認為此刻是該市歷史上的最糟地時刻。但他說，同時認為這將是一個從頭再來的機會，沒有了債務的包袱，因為那些債務原本就沒有全部償還的希望。」
該市依照破產法第九章遞交破產申請。根據底特律18日向密歇根州東區美國破產法院提交的初步文件顯示，該市的資產和債務均超過10億美元。
在底特律衰亡之路的數十年中，該市出現各種問題：居民和企業紛紛遷往郊區、州政府援助縮減、房地產價格暴跌、治安聲名狼藉、種族問題、城市的公共服務不斷變糟等。
此外，密歇根州長在與破產申請一同提交的備忘錄中寫道，「底特律市民致電警方平均要等待58分鐘才能得到回應，而全國平均等待時間為11分鐘。破案率僅為8.7%，密歇根全州的破案率為30.5%。」對此，白宮方面則回應，「總統歐巴馬正密切關注底特律申請破產事件的進展。」
