含金量是指開採一定單位的礦區，所能取得的黃金數目，通常以每公噸的開採量為單位，計算黃金比重。含金量可以用來判斷有無開採價值，含金量愈高，開採愈容易，開採的面積跟深度也愈小，取得黃金的成本就愈低。

以金瓜石為例，台糖內部曾評估，只要含金量達0.5公克，就有開採價值。假設金瓜石還有52公噸的藏金量，如果含金量不高，過去探採技術及設備不好的情況下，因此認為金瓜石已無黃金；相對的，國際金礦業有能力開挖更深，就會認定金瓜石依舊是座寶山。
